Joe Tate is an American politician and former professional football player currently serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives. Born in Detroit, he played college football at Michigan State University before a brief career in the NFL. He later served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, completing two deployments in Afghanistan. After earning an MBA, he entered politics and was elected to the Michigan House in 2018. He made history in 2023 as the first African American to serve as Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives.
