
John Gummer

John Selwyn Gummer, Baron Deben, is a British Conservative Party politician and a member of the House of Lords. First elected to Parliament in 1970, he served as a Member of Parliament for Lewisham West and later Suffolk Coastal until 2010. During his career, he held several government positions, including Chairman of the Conservative Party and Secretary of State for the Environment, where he was noted for his environmental advocacy and the introduction of the Environment Act 1995. Following his appointment to the House of Lords in 2010, he chaired the UK's independent Climate Change Committee, advising the government on carbon budgets and sustainability policy.
