Mandlakayise John Hlophe is a South African politician and former jurist currently serving as a Member of the National Assembly and the Leader of the Opposition. Born in KwaZulu-Natal, he established a distinguished academic career in law before becoming the first judge to be appointed to the Cape High Court directly from academia in 1995. He served as Judge President of the Western Cape Division from 2000 until his impeachment in 2024 following findings of gross misconduct. Since entering politics, he has taken a prominent role within the uMkhonto weSizwe party, advocating for significant structural changes within the South African state.
