John Saumarez Dumaresq

John Saumarez Dumaresq was a distinguished Royal Navy officer and the first Australian-born officer to command the Australian Fleet. Born in Rose Bay, New South Wales, in 1873, he spent most of his career in the United Kingdom, where he became a naval cadet in 1886. He is widely remembered for his technical innovations, most notably the invention of the 'Dumaresq' device, which calculated changes in range to enemy ships. During the First World War, he served with distinction at the Battle of Jutland and later commanded HMAS Sydney. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1921 before his death from pneumonia in 1922.
