Karen Adam

Karen Adam is a Scottish politician serving as the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Banffshire and Buchan Coast since 2021. A member of the Scottish National Party, she previously served as a councillor for the Mid-Formartine ward of Aberdeenshire Council from 2017 to 2021. Adam is known for her advocacy regarding disability rights, having learned British Sign Language as a child to communicate with her deaf father, and she made history as the first MSP to take the oath of affirmation in British Sign Language. Her political career has focused on progressive issues, including support for LGBT and trans rights, and she has served on various parliamentary committees, including the Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee.
