Before entering full-time politics, he worked as a teacher of biology and chemistry for over two decades at the Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule in Markkleeberg. He began his political career as a city councilor and district councilor before being elected mayor, a position he successfully defended in 2020 with 66.8 percent of the vote. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
