Kayse Jama is an American politician currently serving as the Majority Leader of the Oregon State Senate. Born in Somalia, he arrived in the United States as a refugee in 1998 and eventually settled in Portland, Oregon. Before his appointment to the state legislature in 2021, he was a prominent community organizer and served as the executive director of the nonprofit Unite Oregon. Jama is the first Muslim to serve in the Oregon State Legislature and has been a vocal advocate for housing reform, criminal justice reform, and immigrant rights.
