After an unsuccessful bid for the ward mayoralty in 2022, he ran as an independent candidate in 2026 and was elected, defeating the candidate supported by the Liberal Democratic Party and Governor Yuriko Koike. His platform has notably included a proposal to abolish the mayor's office to improve administrative transparency.
