Prior to her current role, she served as the 50th mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, from 2006 to 2023, where she focused on urban redevelopment, environmental sustainability, and municipal infrastructure. Before her tenure as mayor, she was a member of the Salem City Council and worked as a deputy city manager and legal counsel in Chelsea, Massachusetts. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
