A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he previously served as the president of the party's Tamil Nadu unit and as the vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. Before entering national politics, he practiced law for over 15 years and served as the Standing Counsel to the Government of India at the Madras High Court. He is known for his advocacy of Hindutva ideology and his support for policies such as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
