Marcos Pontes

Marcos Pontes is a Brazilian politician, engineer, and former astronaut who currently serves as a Senator for São Paulo. He made history in 2006 as the first South American and Portuguese-speaking person to travel into space aboard the Soyuz TMA-8 mission to the International Space Station. A retired Lieutenant-Colonel of the Brazilian Air Force, he later served as the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations under President Jair Bolsonaro from 2019 to 2022 before entering legislative politics.
