Born in Seoul, South Korea, she moved to Tacoma, Washington, as a child and later built a career in both the private sector and local government, serving as the mayor of Tacoma from 2010 to 2018. As a member of Congress, she is recognized for her historic status as the first African-American representative from Washington and one of the first Korean-American women elected to the House.
