Mark Takano is an American politician and educator serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 39th congressional district since 2023, having previously represented the 41st district from 2013 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he made history as the first openly gay person of Asian descent elected to Congress. Before his legislative career, Takano spent 23 years as a public school teacher. Throughout his tenure, he has focused on veterans' affairs, education, and civil rights, notably serving as the chair of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee during the 116th and 117th Congresses. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ equality, gun control, and reproductive rights.
