Representing the Canton of St. Gallen for The Centre party, he is a prominent advocate for agricultural interests and has served as the president of the Swiss Farmers' Union since 2012. Previously, he was a member of the city council of Altstätten from 1993 to 2012. In early 2025, he was nominated as a candidate for the Federal Council but was not elected.
