Born in Paris, Kentucky, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 2000 to 2004, achieving the rank of captain and deploying to Kosovo and Afghanistan. A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in agriculture, Koch is a professional farrier and co-founder of Shawhan Place, a horse breeding and boarding operation. He is also a board member of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association.
