Mitsuru Sakurai is a Japanese politician and physician currently serving as a member of the House of Councillors, representing the Miyagi Prefecture constituency. A graduate of Tokyo Medical and Dental University with a doctorate in medicine from Tohoku University, he initially worked as an internal medicine physician. Sakurai began his political career in 1998 and has served five consecutive terms in the upper house. Throughout his career, he has held significant roles including Minister of State for Health, Labour and Welfare and Vice Minister of Finance. Originally affiliated with the Democratic Party and its successors, he joined the Liberal Democratic Party in 2022. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Committee on Budget in the House of Councillors and is known for his focus on medical policy and social welfare issues.
