Kalthoff has been active in local politics, including serving on the Neulobeda district council in Jena. After multiple unsuccessful candidacies for the Thuringian Landtag and the European Parliament, he assumed office as a member of the Landtag of Thuringia on March 1, 2025, succeeding Katharina Schenk.
