A member of the Workers' Party (PT), she began her career as a student activist and lawyer for various social movements, including the Landless Workers' Movement (MST). Before her election to the federal legislature in 2018, she served as a city councilor in Natal. Bonavides is known for her focus on human rights, constitutional law, and social justice, and she was a candidate for mayor of Natal in 2024.
