Before entering national politics, he worked as a journalist and served as the chief editor of the newspaper Åndalsnes avis from 2002 to 2008. Kjølmoen was first elected to the Storting in 2021 representing the Møre og Romsdal constituency and was subsequently re-elected in 2025.
