Peter Mertens is a Belgian politician who has served as a member of the Chamber of Representatives since 2019 and as a municipal councilor in Antwerp since 2013. He previously led the Workers' Party of Belgium (PTB-PVDA) as chairman from 2008 to 2021, during which time he oversaw a significant modernization of the party's platform, distancing it from its historical Maoist and Stalinist roots. A sociologist by training, Mertens is also a prolific author known for his critical analysis of contemporary capitalism and social inequality.
