A member of the Republican Party, he has represented District 14 in the West Virginia Senate since 2017. Prior to his tenure in the state senate, he served as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from 2013 to 2017. Born in Oakland, Maryland, in 1960, Smith has been a long-standing figure in West Virginia state politics.
