Renato Solidum Jr. is a Filipino geologist and government official currently serving as the Secretary of Science and Technology of the Philippines, a position he has held since 2022. Before his appointment to the cabinet, he had a long and distinguished career at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), where he served as director and played a critical role in disaster risk reduction, notably during the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. He holds a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of the Philippines, a master's degree from the University of Illinois Chicago, and a PhD in earth sciences from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.
