Richard Hermer, Baron Hermer, is a British barrister and life peer who has served as the Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland since July 2024. Before his appointment to the government by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he had a distinguished legal career specializing in human rights, public law, and environmental law. He was called to the bar in 1993, took silk in 2009, and served as a deputy High Court judge starting in 2019. Throughout his career, he represented victims in numerous high-profile cases, including the Grenfell Tower fire inquest and various international human rights matters. He is the first person in over a century to hold the office of Attorney General without having previously served in either the House of Commons or the House of Lords.
