Before her appointment to the Senate, she represented the riding of Rogersville-Kouchibouguac in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1999 to 2010, where she held cabinet positions including Minister of Local Government and Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. Her political career began at the municipal level as a councillor in Saint-Louis-de-Kent. She is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party.
