Previously, she served in the California State Assembly from 2016 to 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, she has focused on economic development, veteran employment, and education policy. Cervantes made history in 2019 as the first member of the California State Legislature to give birth to triplets while in office. She is an active member of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, the California Legislative Women's Caucus, and the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus.
