Shami Chakrabarti is a British politician, barrister, and human rights activist who has served as a life peer in the House of Lords since 2016. Before entering Parliament, she was the long-serving director of the advocacy group Liberty from 2003 to 2016, where she became a prominent public figure campaigning against anti-terror legislation and for civil liberties. She previously served as the Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales from 2016 to 2020. A member of the Labour Party, she also chaired the 2016 inquiry into antisemitism and other forms of racism within the party. Throughout her career, she has been a frequent commentator on human rights, served on the Leveson Inquiry panel, and acted as Chancellor of the University of Essex.
