An evangelical Christian and member of the Labour Party, he has held various ministerial roles, including Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Chief Secretary to the Treasury during the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In July 2024, he was appointed Minister of State for Social Security and Disability. Before his parliamentary career, Timms worked in the telecommunications industry and served as the Leader of the Newham London Borough Council. He is a knighted public servant who has remained a prominent figure in British politics for over three decades.
