Tahir Büyükakın is a Turkish politician and academic currently serving as the Mayor of Kocaeli. Born in Derince, he pursued an academic career in public administration, eventually becoming an associate professor at Kocaeli University. Before his election as mayor, he served as the Secretary General of the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and as the Governor of Bilecik. He was first elected as the Mayor of Kocaeli in 2019 and was re-elected in 2024. A member of the Justice and Development Party, he is known for his active role in local governance and his focus on regional development.
