A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013 and in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1993 to 1999. Baldwin is noted for her progressive voting record on healthcare, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ rights, having achieved several historic milestones as the first openly lesbian woman elected to both the Wisconsin State Assembly and the U.S. Congress, as well as the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the U.S. Senate.
