Before his legislative career, he served as the first full-time mayor of the municipality of Ilmtal-Weinstraße from 2014 to 2019. Gottweiss has been active in local politics in the Weimarer Land district since 2004, where he has chaired the CDU parliamentary group in the district council. His policy focus includes energy, where he has advocated for regional self-sufficiency in renewable energy production and the implementation of minimum distance regulations for wind turbines.
