Prior to his election to the state legislature, he served as a Vermillion County Commissioner from 2015 to 2025. In 2025, Yocum faced public scrutiny regarding an improper ex parte communication with a judge concerning a small-claims case involving a home remodeling project, which resulted in a court ruling against him. He continues to hold his seat in the Indiana General Assembly.
