A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he also serves as a deputy state chairman of the SPD in Saxony. Before entering politics, he held various management positions, including roles at Globus Holding in Germany, Russia, and as a managing director for the AWO district association in Lusatia. He was elected mayor following a runoff election in 2020.
