A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served on the Charlotte City Council and as mayor pro-tem. Lyles has a background in public administration, having worked as a budget analyst and assistant city manager for the city of Charlotte. Her mayoral tenure has focused on economic development, affordable housing initiatives, public safety programs, and the expansion of the city's light rail infrastructure. She is the first African-American female mayor of Charlotte.
