Adam Smith is an American politician and attorney who has served as the U.S. Representative for Washington's 9th congressional district since 1997. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the Washington State Senate, where he was elected at age 25 as the youngest state senator in the country. Throughout his congressional career, Smith has focused on national security and foreign affairs, notably serving as the Chair and later Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a member of the New Democrat Coalition and the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and has been a proponent of moderate policy positions while advocating for issues such as housing reform and global poverty reduction.
