An independent candidate, he was elected to the office in May 2019 and assumed his duties on November 1, 2019. Prior to his election, he had a long-standing career with the city administration of Wilhelmshaven, where he served as the head of the department for youth, family, education, sports, prevention, and migration. He has announced that he will not seek re-election in the 2026 mayoral race.
