Representing the 18th House District, which covers a portion of New Hanover County, she is a member of the Democratic Party and the Progressive House Caucus. Before her appointment to the legislature, Butler worked as a lawyer in Wilmington, North Carolina. She is recognized as one of the openly LGBT officeholders serving in the North Carolina state legislature.
