Eiko Tsuya is a Japanese politician currently serving his fifth term as the Mayor of Kitaakita in Akita Prefecture. Born in 1951 in the town of Takanosu (now part of Kitaakita), he graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Economics in 1975. Before his mayoral career, he served six terms as a member of the Akita Prefectural Assembly, where he was affiliated with the Liberal Democratic Party and held the position of assembly chairman from 2001 to 2003. He was first elected mayor in 2009 and has since secured multiple re-elections, including victories in 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025. During his tenure, he has focused on local administration and crisis management, notably implementing salary cuts for city officials to fund COVID-19 countermeasures.
