A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he previously served as a city council member and First Mayor of Krefeld. Meyer holds a Master of Arts in political management and administration from the NRW School of Governance. Throughout his career, he has held various leadership roles in municipal associations, including the Association of German Cities and the Euregio Rhein-Maas-Nord. In 2025, he was re-elected for a third term, becoming the first SPD mayor in Krefeld to achieve this milestone.
