Before his election to Congress, he served in the North Carolina General Assembly from 2015 to 2019, where he focused on healthcare policy, including initiatives to combat the opioid epidemic. A graduate of Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Murphy maintained a medical practice in Greenville, North Carolina, and served as Chief of Staff at Vidant Medical Center.
