Hayato Matsuoka is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Hitoyoshi in Kumamoto Prefecture. Born in 1977, he graduated from Kumamoto University before entering local politics. He served two terms as a member of the Hitoyoshi City Council starting in 2007. In 2015, he was elected mayor after campaigning against a costly municipal office relocation project. He has since been re-elected for second and third terms in 2019 and 2023. Matsuoka is also a member of the Ryoma Project, a cross-partisan group of local leaders.
