Ilhan Omar is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party and the informal group known as 'The Squad,' she is the first Somali American elected to the U.S. Congress and one of the first two Muslim women to serve in the body. Her political platform focuses on progressive policies, including universal healthcare, student debt forgiveness, and environmental reform. Previously, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019.
