Issei Tajima is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Hikone City, having been elected in April 2025. Prior to his mayoral tenure, he served four terms as a member of the House of Representatives, where he held the position of State Minister of the Environment under the Hatoyama and Kan cabinets. His political career began in local government as a member of the Hikone City Council and the Shiga Prefectural Assembly. Tajima holds degrees from Chuo University and Doshisha University, and he previously worked for Takenaka Corporation and Tajima Bussan. Throughout his career, he has been involved in environmental policy, including the development of the Basic Act on Biodiversity, and has maintained a focus on local community preservation and civic engagement.
