He was a long-standing co-leader of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, holding the position from 2015 until his retirement in 2024. During his political career, he served as the Minister for Climate Change, Minister of Statistics, and Associate Minister of Finance, where he was instrumental in advancing the Zero Carbon Act. Before entering politics, he worked as a management consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers and HSBC.
