Throughout his career, he has been a prominent figure in local governance, serving as the national chairman of the VVD and as president of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG). He is recognized for his contributions to international relations and has received numerous honors, including the Legion of Honour from France and the Order of the Rising Sun from Japan.
