Janet Fookes is a British politician and life peer who currently serves as a member of the House of Lords. She previously had a long career in the House of Commons, representing the constituencies of Merton and Morden from 1970 to 1974 and Plymouth Drake from 1974 to 1997. During her time in the Commons, she served as a Deputy Speaker from 1992 to 1997. Before entering national politics, she worked as a teacher and served as a councillor on the Hastings Borough Council. She has been recognized for her public service as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
