José Manuel Fernandes is a Portuguese politician currently serving as the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in the government led by Luís Montenegro. A member of the Social Democratic Party, he previously had a long-standing career as a Member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2024, where he focused on budgetary issues and served as a rapporteur for the European Fund for Strategic Investments. Before his time in Brussels, he served as the Mayor of Vila Verde from 1997 to 2009. Fernandes holds a degree in systems engineering and computer science from the University of Minho and has authored several publications regarding European funds and regional development.
