Raised in Ekalaka, Montana, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Montana State University. Before his election to the state legislature in November 2020, Kortum worked in construction and as a firefighter. He is also the founder of the Gallatin Progressive Action Network and assumed office on January 4, 2021.
