Martijn Erasmus Smit is a Dutch politician and administrator currently serving as the Mayor of Beverwijk, a position he has held since May 2017. Before his current tenure, he served as the mayor of Zeevang and Wijdemeren. His political career began as a municipal councilor and alderman in Edam-Volendam, where he notably managed the aftermath of the 2001 Volendam café fire. Formerly a member of the Labour Party (PvdA), he has since become an independent politician. He has announced his intention to step down from his mayoral office in September 2026.
