Masahiro Obana is a Japanese politician who has served as the Mayor of Wakayama City since 2014. Born in the former Misato town (now Kimino), he graduated from the University of Tokyo with degrees in agricultural engineering and civil engineering. Before entering politics, he had a long career as a civil servant in the Wakayama Prefectural Government, eventually serving as the Director of the Prefectural Land Development Department. During his tenure as mayor, he oversaw the implementation of the city's first family education support ordinance and faced public scrutiny regarding the management of animal welfare crowdfunding donations. In March 2026, he announced his intention to retire at the end of his third term due to health concerns related to pancreatic cancer treatment.
