Mathias De Clercq

Mathias De Clercq is a Belgian politician currently serving as the Mayor of Ghent. A member of the Flemish liberal party, he previously served as a federal representative from 2007 to 2014 and as a Flemish representative from 2014 to 2019. Between 2007 and 2019, he also held the position of schepen in Ghent. Known for his affiliation with the social liberal wing of his party, De Clercq assumed the role of President of the Eurocities network in June 2025. He comes from a prominent political family, being the grandson of former European Commissioner Willy De Clercq.
